Academic Misconduct
Any form of unethical behavior that violates the integrity of the academic process, such as bestowing or seeking academic favors or advancements on the basis of friendship or gifts, concealing conflicts of interest, or deliberate failure to meet professional obligations.
ADA Matters
Failure to meet requirements as defined by the American Disability Act (ADA). (Examples include: proper disability access)
Alcohol / Drug Abuse
The misuse of both legal and illegal drugs including alcohol. (Examples include: cocaine, narcotics, marijuana, stimulants)
Bias Incidents
A bias incident is a speech, act, or harassing action that targets, threatens, or attacks an individual or group because of their actual or perceived race, color, national origin, ethnicity, religious affiliation, sex, gender identity, disability, or sexual orientation that is perpetrated against a student in violation of the student conduct code. Bias incidents and hate crimes involving only students will be adjudicated through the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities and/or referred to federal, state, or local authorities.
Cheating / Plagiarism
Authorized or unauthorized student usage of answers, papers, works, or projects owned or created by another student, professional or individual.
Credentials Misrepresentation
Theft or forgery of titles, diplomas, transcripts, grades or other official documents represented by an individual as his or her own.
Disclosure of Confidential Information
Unlawful and unauthorized disclosure or use of sensitive information, not to be used other than for specifically identified purposes, to unauthorized individuals or for personal gain or advantage. Violations of the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
Discrimination or Harassment
Uninvited and unwelcome verbal or physical conduct directed at a student, faculty, or member of staff, because of his or her sex, race, color, religion, ethnicity, age, marital status, veteran status, handicap, disability of any other characteristics protected by applicable federal, state, or local law. This includes reports of retaliation for making a report or participating in an investigation.
Disrespectful Behavior
Inappropriate behavior that may include, but is not limited to, personal attacks, inflammatory usernames and/or images in online workspaces, perceived shouting within e-communications or in-person, using profanity or crude language, or engaging in discourse that does not meet acceptable standards of civility.
Disruption/Disturbances of Learning Environments
Conduct that materially and substantially interferes with or obstructs the teaching or learning process in the context of a classroom, educational setting, or APUS-sponsored activity whether in-person or online.
Falsification/Fabrication
The submission of any falsified APUS student information to any third party, including diplomas, transcripts, and registration information.
Hazing
The demeaning of a student through physical or mental means for the purpose of initiations in, or acceptance into a group.
Human or Animal Research
Inappropriate use of humans or animals involved in research.
Offensive or Inappropriate Communication
The use of inflammatory, derogatory, unduly critical or insulting communication to a staff person, faculty, administrator, alumni or student.
Scholarship / Financial Aid Misconduct
Falsifying entrance or placement exams; utilizing an assumed name; improper inducement of benefits or financial aid. Unusual treatment for one player and not for others in loans, transportation or housing benefits; arranging for fraudulent academic credit or falsification of transcripts.
Scientific Misconduct
Fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, or other practices that seriously deviate from those that are commonly accepted within the scientific community for proposing, conducting, or reporting research. Fabrication is making up data or results and recording or reprinting them. Falsification is manipulating research materials, equipment or processes, or changing or omitting data or results, such that the research is not accurately reported in the research record. Plagiarism is the appropriation of another person's ideas, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit.
Sexual Harassment
Discrimination on the basis of one's sex. Sex discrimination may include, but is not limited to, sexual harassment that denies or limits on the basis of sex a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from APUS’s education programs and activities.
Terrorism
Any written or oral statement, communication, conduct, or gesture directed toward any member of the APUS community which causes a reasonable apprehension of physical or psychological harm or death to self or others, or damage to property.
Theft/Abuse of University Property or Electronic Resources
Theft or abuse of the University’s electronic resources such as computer and electronic communications facilities, systems, data, and services. Abuses include, but are not limited to, unauthorized entry, use, transfer, or tampering with the University’s communications of others; interference with the work of others and with the operation of computer and electronic communications facilities, systems, and services; or using University resources to carry out illegal or unethical activities. This prohibited conduct also includes theft, destruction, or damage to any University property, whether on campus or at a university-sponsored event.
Violence/Threat
An expression of the intention to inflict evil, injury, or damage to a person or their property. Any written or oral statement, communication, conduct, or gesture directed toward any member of the APUS community which causes a reasonable apprehension of physical or psychological harm or death to self or others, or damage to property. This includes indirect threats and innuendo.
Wrongful Use of Platforms
An attack on, destruction and/or taking of, or vandalism of University websites, networks, or other resources.
