Bentley College
Academic Misconduct including Plagiarism and Cheating
Any form of unethical behavior that violates the integrity of the academic process, such as bestowing or seeking academic favors or advancements on the basis of friendship or gifts, concealing conflicts of interest, or deliberate failure to meet professional obligations. Authorized or unauthorized student usage of answers, papers, works, or projects owned or created by another student, professional or individual.
Accounting and Auditing Matters
The unethical systematic recording and analysis of the business and financial transactions associated with generally accepted accounting practices. (Examples include: misstatement of revenues, misstatement of expenses, misstatement of assets, misapplications of GAAP principles, wrongful transactions)
Bias Incidents
A bias incident is characterized as a behavior or act—verbal, written or physical—which is personally directed against or targets an individual or group based on perceived or actual characteristics such as race, color, religious belief, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national or ethnic origin, disability, veteran status, or age. Behavior reflecting bias may constitute a violation of Bentley University policy.
Conflict of Interest
Issues relating to potential violations of the Conflict of Interest Policy. A conflict of interest exists when a Bentley representative or a member of their family is in the position to benefit personally, directly or indirectly, from their dealings with an organization or person conducting business with Bentley.
Data Privacy
Refers to the technical, contractual, administrative and physical steps taken by the institution to protect against unauthorized access to and disclosure of personally identifiable data of students, faculty and other third parties that we possess or other information that Bentley deems confidential. Includes the theft of, and intentional or inadvertent loss of such data.
Discrimination or Harassment including EEOC or ADA matters
Failure to meet requirements as defined by Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or American Disability Act (ADA). Uninvited and unwelcome verbal or physical conduct directed at an employee because of his or her sex, religion, ethnicity or beliefs. (Examples include: bias in hiring, bias in assignments, wrongful termination, bias in promotions, bias in educational decisions, unfair compensation, inappropriate language). Retaliation or retribution are also violations of the policy.
Employee Misconduct
Involves any employee conduct that is in violation of the institution's code of conduct, ethics policy, obligations of confidentiality, faculty, employee handbooks or any other printed materials that constitute employee conduct. Falsifying work hours or abuse of Bentley benefit plans.
Fraud or Financial Issues
Financial, accounting or donor stewardship issues. The intentional misrepresentation or concealment of information in order to deceive, mislead, or acquire something of value. A fraud is an intentional deception perpetrated to secure an unfair gain. (Examples include: Violation of Policy, Sabotage)
Gender based harassment and discrimination including violations under Title IX
Sexual and gender based harassment, discrimination, sexual assault including stalking, domestic violence and sexual exploitation under both Bentley's discrimination policy and Title IX policy.
Hazing
The demeaning of a student through physical or mental means for the purpose of initiations in, or acceptance into a group.
Improper Giving or Receiving of Gifts
The giving, receiving or solicitation of items which could be reasonably interpreted as an effort to influence a business relationship or decision; items given, received or solicited for the benefit of an individual or an individual's family or friends; items given, received or solicited during or in connection with contract negotiations; the acceptance of cash, checks, money order, vouchers, gift certificates, loans, products or services.
Improper Supplier or Contractor Activity
Supplier or contractor activity in violation of institution's policies and procedures; improper supplier or contractor selection based on personal gain, improper negotiation or diversion of contract awards.
Offensive or Inappropriate Communication/Bullying
The use of inflammatory, derogatory, unduly critical or insulting communication to a staff person, faculty, administrator, alumni or student. Such conduct can occur face-to-face, in a group setting, through social media or email, or through gossip.
Risk & Safety/Unsafe Working Conditions
Non-emergency concerns and issues relating to health, safety or the environment. Failure to maintain a secure working environment including environmental damage, OSHA, EPA or other situations which involve a threat to health or safety.
Scientific Misconduct
Issues relating to the University's research programs. Fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, or other practices that seriously deviate from those that are commonly accepted within the scientific community for proposing, conducting, or reporting research. Fabrication is making up data or results and recording or reprinting them. Falsification is manipulating research materials, equipment or processes, or changing or omitting data or results, such that the research is not accurately reported in the research record. Plagiarism is the appropriation of another person's ideas, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit.
Theft / Embezzlement
The act of stealing; specifically: the felonious taking and removing of personal property with intent to deprive the rightful owner of it. To appropriate (as property entrusted to one's care) fraudulently to one's own use (Examples include: bookkeeping errors, misapplication of funds, and mishandling of cash)
Waste, Abuse or Misuse of Institution Resources
Improper or unauthorized use of this institution's resources and technologies for personal gain.
