Sexual Harassment
The making of unwanted and offensive sexual advances or sexually offensive remarks or acts, especially by one in a senior position however it is not limited to unwanted advances made by a superior but can also include peer to peer situations. Examples of sexual harassment include but are not limited to unwelcome physical contact, such as patting, pinching or brushing against another person's body; sexual bantering, "jokes" and "teasing;"; sexual flirtations, advances or propositions; verbal commentaries about an individual's body, sexuality, or sexual orientation.
Discrimination
Uninvited and unwelcome verbal or physical conduct directed at a SIAM colleague, conference attendee, vendor or staff member because of his or her sex, religion, ethnicity, beliefs or seniority. This includes derogatory comments about an individual's membership in any protected group; jokes, comments or stories which have the purpose or effect of stereotyping, demeaning or making fun of any protected group.
Violence or Threat
An expression of the intention to inflict injury, or damage to a person or their property.
Offensive or Inappropriate Communication
The use of inflammatory, derogatory, unduly critical or insulting communication to a fellow SIAM colleague, conference attendee, vendor or staff member.
Scientific Misconduct
Fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, or other practices that seriously deviate from those that are commonly accepted within the scientific community for proposing, conducting, or reporting research. Fabrication is making up data or results and recording or reprinting them. Falsification is manipulating research materials, equipment or processes, or changing or omitting data or results, such that the research is not accurately reported in the research record. Plagiarism is the appropriation of another person’s ideas, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit.
Safety
An unsafe situation exists at a SIAM conference or activity which can cause harm to people or property.
Accessibility Issue
Failure of the conference site or the conference program/activities to meet the requirements of the American Disability Act (ADA).
