Academic Misconduct Any form of unethical behavior, in the academic setting, that violates the integrity and expectations of the academic process. Such violations include but are not limited to plagiarism, cheating, falsification, bestowing or seeking academic favors or advancements on the basis of friendship or gifts, and other unethical academic behaviors.
Conflict of Interest A conflict of interest is defined as a situation in which a person, such as a public official, a student, an employee, or a professional, has a private or personal interest sufficient to appear to influence the objective exercise of his or her official duties. (Examples include: inappropriate vendor relations, bribery, misuse of confidential information, inappropriate customer relations)
Discrimination and Harassment Adverse treatment of an individual based on the basis of a protected personal characteristic (race, sex, gender identity and gender expression, etc), or imposing an unreasonable condition that disadvantages a person because of their protected personal characteristic. Also includes failing to provide reasonable accommodation to persons with disabilities
Financial Misconduct Any unauthorized, irregular or wasteful financial actions including but not limited to, fraud, waste, theft, embezzlement, improper giving or receiving of gifts or financial awards, mishandling of funds, unethical recording and analysis of financial transactions, falsification of financial reports or contracts, and the misuse of institutional resources.
Healthcare Concerns Concerns related to the healthcare services provided by CUSM Health such as quality of care, access to services, patient privacy and confidentiality, patient billing and coding issues and/or any type of behavior that violates established healthcare regulations and laws.
Human Resources Concerns Concerns related to staff and faculty and their employment, workplace relations, and staff management. Concerns may include but are not limited to, conduct in the workplace, the treatment of employees, and violation of workplace policies and standards as defined in the employee handbooks, faculty handbook, contracts, etc.
Legal or Regulatory Violation Statements, conduct, or actions that violate local, state, or federal laws, as well as breaches of industry-specific regulations. This includes non-compliance with educational regulations, labor laws, disability accommodations, environmental laws, and other statutory requirements. May also include the disclosure or inappropriate use of confidential and proprietary information belonging to CUSM.
Medical/Patient Billing and Coding Issues The unethical systematic recording and analysis of the business and financial transactions associated with generally accepted accounting practices. (Examples include: misstatement of revenues, misstatement of expenses, misstatement of assets, misapplications of GAAP principles, wrongful transactions.)
Research Misconduct Research misconduct means fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in proposing, performing, or reviewing research, or in reporting research results.

(a) Fabrication is making up data or results and recording or reporting them.

(b) Falsification is manipulating research materials, equipment, or processes, or changing or omitting data or results such that the research is not accurately represented in the research record.

(c) Plagiarism is the appropriation of another person's ideas, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit.

(d) Research misconduct does not include honest error or differences of opinion.

Sexual Harassment The making of unwanted and offensive sexual advances or of sexually offensive remarks or acts, especially by one in a superior or supervisory position or when acquiescence to such behavior is a condition of continued employment, promotion, or satisfactory evaluation.
Student Misconduct Any actions or behaviors that are considered to have breached the standards and policies established by CUSM to promote a safe, respectful and ethical campus environment such as violations of the student code of conduct, unlawful alcohol and drug use, vandalism, hazing, unauthorized access or use of University facilities, and disruptive behavior.
