A letter from Archbishop J. Peter Sartain

BishopThe Archdiocese of Seattle is dedicated to managing the resources of the Church as faithful stewards. To fulfill the mission of the Church, we must work together in an ethical and accountable manner. Therefore, we set high standards for ourselves and expect everyone to work within established Archdiocesan policies and procedures and the guidelines set forth in Many Gifts, One Spirit, our Pastoral and Sacramental Policies.

There are many procedures already in place within the Archdiocese of Seattle to help ensure accountability and transparency. For example, every parish is required to have a Parish Finance Council and to provide an annual financial report to parishioners and the chancery. The Archdiocese publishes annual reports which are posted on the Archdiocesan website, www.seattlearch.org. The Archdiocesan Finance Council consults with me in the oversight of the finances of our Archdiocese. The central ministries of the Archdiocese and our benefit plans are audited by independent auditors annually. Furthermore, parishes are subject to periodic finance and human resources reviews by Parish Financial Services.

We can do more, however, to ensure the proper stewardship of the temporal goods of the Church. One method is to provide interested parties with a way to confidentially report concerns about conduct related to church activities. The use of hotlines is growing more common in other diocesan and non-profit organizations, and we believe a hotline will help us achieve our goals of transparency and accountability throughout the Archdiocese of Seattle.

We have selected EthicsPoint, an independent third-party company, to provide an ethics hotline so employees, volunteers, parishioners, vendors and other interested parties can report concerns about suspected financial or human resources misconduct. This provides us with an additional measure that supports compliance with the extensive policies and procedures of the Archdiocese. Reports can be filed confidentially on this hotline via the web by choosing the "Make a Report" link on the right side of this web page seattlearchdiocese.ethicspoint.com, or via one of EthicsPoint's trained specialists at 1-844-815-8236.

Thank you for your time and support. Let us continue to work together to become better stewards of the Lord’s countless gifts!
